Artist In Residence

Applications are closed for our summer residency - submit your application to be considered for our next residency (likely Fall 2024).

Application Deadline: TBD

This 4 month self-directed and independent Artist in Residency opportunity is offered for BIPOC, LGTBQIA+, or individuals from other historically marginalized groups.

Our mission at Clayworks on Columbia is to create a joyful, artistic space for everyone. In particular, opening doors for a diverse group of artists in our community to learn, create and develop their unique voice in art and to expand their knowledge and experiences in ceramics. One of the ways in which we strive to accomplish this mission is to offer an Artist-In Residency Program for 1-2 artists per year.

APPLICATION

All candidates will be required to submit an application. You can access the application form here. The application is short and sweet and we ask that you share a bit about yourself, your work, and the work you’d like to make. There is no fee to apply and we will continue to reevaluate previous submissions with each new residency cycle. We may not reply to all submissions, but if you are being considered for the opportunity we will be in touch directly.

If you have any files you would like to send (Resume, Portfolio, Photos, etc), please email them to erin.michaela@hey.com and include your full name in the subject line.

RESIDENCY OVERVIEW

Selected AIR’s will have full use of our studio and tools (wheels, slab roller, extruder, handbuilding tools, canvases etc). Support from Clayworks instructors and staff is always available. AIR’s are expected, at the end of their residency, to organize and host a workshop on a particular topic or technique of interest for Clayworks members and students.

The Artist will receive a $400 stipend to use towards purchase of any clay and/or unique materials/tools for their artwork, unlimited use of  in-house glazes and 50% off firing fees.

The selected Artist should have an active studio practice and be familiar with working in a ceramic studio. AIR’s should plan to commit to at least 6 hours of studio time per week, documenting their process, learnings and experiences, as well as help to organize and/or host a workshop on a particular technique for the community.

Finally, applicants must be 18 yrs of age or older and be able to access the studio via public or personal transportation. Housing is not included as part of this residency.
