Coil Building will give you the freedom to create all kinds of vessels in a large variety of shapes and sizes. This four session workshop will guide students through the process of making ceramic vessels using many coil building techniques. We will start with the basics and finish by constructing a curved, free-form, lidded piece. Tools and clay will be provided.
What
We’ll Cover
Session 1
COIL BUILDING BASICS
Hand rolling coils, making a base, stacking and blending coils to create uniform walls to ensure structural integrity. In this class, students will construct a tall vase using these techniques.
Session 2
ADVANCED COIL BUILDING TECHNIQUES
Focus on shaping and refining a vessel. Introduction to decorative techniques using coils and other methods. Troubleshooting common issues in coil building: cracking, uneven walls and incorrect drying technique. Students will construct a curved vessel with decorative elements.
Session 3
MAKING A LIDDED VESSEL
We will learn 3 techniques for making a lidded coil-built piece and construct a vessel using one of these techniques. We will go over firing and glazing techniques.
Session 4
GLAZING
Students will make an appointment with Sandra to come and glaze their pieces at least 2 weeks after the final class. This will take about one hour depending on the number of pieces.
Meet Your Instructor
Sandra McLean is a clay artist and educator. She has worked as an artist and has shown in the USA, Europe and Asia. She has taught university Art courses the USA for many years and upper school Art internationally. She is primarily a hand builder and explores the liminal space between functional pottery and sculpture. She derives her inspiration from ancient forms encountered while traveling and from the depths of her imagination. Follow her work and more on instagram
